Wolves attacking hunting dogs

July 31, 2009 - 6:44 AM

PARK FALLS, Wis. - Wildlife officials say wolves have attacked hunting dogs
in northern Wisconsin.

The Department of Natural Resources says over the last two weeks wolves have killed four dogs and injured another as bear hunters trained them in Bayfield, Burnett, Clark and Oneida counties.

DNR officials say the wolves may have been protecting pups. The agency has added all four areas to its list of wolf caution areas.

Wolves are again listed as a federally endangered species. Killing them is illegal.

DNR officials say bear hunters should avoid training or hunting in areas with concentrated wolf activity.

  2. These are bear hounds that are being trained to tree black bears. They usually are exactly the same breeds that are used to hunt raccoons, but of course, have to be tougher animals.

These dogs range a very long distance from their owners. And that's where the problem is.

Very often they run too close to wolf dens, and the wolves consider the dogs to be interloping wolves from other packs. And nornmally, a wolf does only one thing when it encounters a wolf from another pack on its territory. It tries to run it off, or if push really comes to shove, the wolves kill the interloper.

    And that's what happens here.

Now, in some areas, the wolves have developed cannibalism as a way of survival. And if they'll eat another wolf, there's little to stop them from eating a dog, which is basically a wolf that isn't as powerful.

It's a very tough situation, but it's a risk bear hunters take when they run their dogs in wolf country.
